From the President

Welcome to the combined June/July issue of the Hashomer. Before I list the religious and social events taking place during these two months, I want to discuss a serious problem-attendance at daily minyanim and at Shabbat services.

I don’t need to explain to anyone why it’s so important that we have 10 men for morning and evening services. But it’s becoming a bigger problem in recent months, and I fear that it’s about to get bigger when the Yeshiva boys are gone. When we have a special simcha at the shul-whether it’s a Family Shabbat Dinner or a Men’s Club function (even a meeting on a Sunday morning), or even a Sisterhood event (men attend those, too!), we have no trouble getting 10 men to attend. So I know the men are out there. I also understand that 6:45a.m. is early (and that 8:30a.m. is early on a Saturday) and that 6:00 p.m. conflicts with dinner time. I understand that life is very busy for all of us because I live one of those busy lives myself. For those of you who have not been attending, all we need is for you to give of one day a week on a regular basis. If each of you did this, we would not have a problem. I would not ask anyone to do something I wouldn’t do myself. We need to know why you are not attending if you are not. So, please, email me (edubow@bgsu.edu) and let me know what the barriers are to you attending. If it’s transportation, one of the members who attends would be happy to pick you up. If we find out that a simple change in the time by a half hour on the weekday mornings would increase our attendance, we would be open to that. But please, help out your fellow congregants who need to say kaddish and do the mitzvah of coming to one daily minyan a week; not to mention Shabbat services.

Now for the June and July religious events. On June 5, at a special Shabbat service, we will be honoring the High School and Middle School graduates of the shul. Chelsea Mollenkamp, Austin Morris, Hannah Shafransky, Alex Silverman, and Nicholas Thanasiu are graduating from area high schools. Isaac Rubin, Gerald Singer, Devon Tarschis and Michael Wittenberg are graduating from area middle schools. Mazel Tov to the graduates and their families!

In addition, we have two Bar/Bat Mitzvahs in June and July. Adam Ramirez will celebrate his Bar Mitzvah on Saturday, June 12, and Rochael Rubin will celebrate her Bat Mitzvah on Saturday, July 24. Mazel Tov to Adam and Rochael and their proud families!

We also observe the holiday of Tisha B’Av on July 19th and 20th. The times of the services are listed in the calendar in this bulletin.

There are several social events occurring in June and July as well. On June 6, we have the Sisterhood Closing Luncheon, when the Sisterhood will honor Diane Treuhaft as "Woman of the Year" . Diane will be recognized for all of her contributions to the synagogue and to the Sisterhood. On June 20, the Mesivta High School Boys Yeshiva will host an Inaugural Dinner at the synagogue, honoring Rabbi and Sara Garsek as well as their first graduating class. Other social events in July are the Book Club on July 12 and on July 25 the Men’s Club will host their annual Mud Hen’s Game. The tailgate party begins at 4:30 p.m. at the shul. The game begins at 6:00 p.m. On June 27, the Interfaith Blood Drive will be held from 9:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. at Grace Lutheran Church on Monroe St.

We hope you take advantage of these religious and social events at the shul. Enjoy the summer!

Eric Dubow
